My Favorite Features of the Epic! Reading App

An excellent classroom app is one that includes top-quality content, keeps students engaged, and gets them coming back again and again for more. Just one app fits the bill with every class I've taught. Here are my favorite features of the Epic! reading app.

The Epic! reading app is your best option for online books for reading or listening centers. This FREE app for classrooms contains at least 25,000 top-quality books and audiobooks with many favorite titles, series and beloved characters to choose from. Epic! Content

The Epic! app contains 25,000 high-quality texts with both fiction and non-fiction titles and series to choose from. Some of the highlights for me include:
  • National Geographic Kids texts;
  • Favorite series like Pete the Cat, Big Nate, Fancy Nancy, Frog and Toad, and The Boxcar Children;
  • Beloved characters such as The Berenstain Bears, Splat the Cat, Scaredy Squirrel, Flat Stanley, and more!

Student Features

Let's begin with the setup. When you add a new student to your Epic! classroom, they can immediately customize their reading profile by indicating their age and interests. This individualizes their main page with appropriate texts to match.

Once the setup is complete, your students can get reading! As they explore the app, they earn achievements which allow them to unlock customizations to their profile. My students tell me that this is a highlight of the app for them!

They love to be recognized with badges for the reading they complete!

Students also can create a list of personal favorites. This is especially helpful when they're reading or listening to longer texts that they'd like to revisit during a future Epic! session, or when they have a title that they wish to read again and again.

My students also love that they can rate a book once they've completed it. There is a ranking system of 1 to 5 stars that students select right on their screen.

Teacher Features

Within the teacher section, I can see detailed student data for each child in my classroom. There is a master overview page that includes our class totals and an overview of how many books and hours each student has read.

There is a menu under each student's name that will open up more detailed information about their reading habits including which books they've opened, how long they spent on each, how many pages the student flipped, and whether or not they completed the book.

I also can create book collections with any of the texts on the site and assign them to any or all of my students. Using any book, I can also create a multiple-choice quiz to share or assign to students. There are many collections and quizzes already available from other educators' accounts.

Try It Now!

If you have even one device in your classroom, I'd highly recommend the Epic! app. It is entirely free for classroom use, and families who wish to use it at home can connect for a small monthly fee.

There is an excellent "Educator Resources" section on the website that contains helpful tutorials, videos, and additional resources.

  1. I have been searching everywhere trying to find the answers to a few questions...what does "pages flipped" mean exactly? How can a student have finished a book but only flipped 2 pages? Or how can a book be finished but it only took them 1 minute? I am just having trouble interpreting the info it is giving me because some of my students' activity does not make sense!

    1. Hi there! Pages flipped means exactly what it sounds like. Sometimes students will open a book and just flip through the pages without reading (I've found they sometimes do this to claim a badge, and remind them that I can track every movement from my end.) which is why they finish in one minute. As far as finishing a book with only 2 flipped pages, I'm not sure. I'd have to see the book they were reading. Perhaps you could reach out to the Epic! Books support team online or in their Facebook group for more answers?

      Thanks for reaching out!

  2. I was wondering the same thing about a quick finish and no pages flipped. I'm wondering if "pages flipped" means the student physically flipping the page, as opposed to the auto-reader flipping the page?

    1. Hi there,

      I'm really not sure about that. You should probably check out the Epic! website directly for that info.

  3. My pages are flipping vertical and I can not see the entire picture or read all the words. I have tried everything I can think of. It all started with me clicking on a book that was assigned to my daughter. how can I get the pages back to normal reading side to side?

  4. My pages are not turning on my grand son's assigned books, but turn on other books. Does the teacher have control of that? Does he/she need to set that up? T/y

    1. Hi there!

      Thanks for stopping by! I'm not 100% sure of that as I can't see how the teacher has assigned books set up. I would recommend reaching out to them, or contacting Epic!'s customer support on the website.

  5. Hi!

    Teacher here who uses EPIC and love it! I recently ran into a curious thing. One of my kids finished reading a book, as in got to the end, but the finish book button wouldn't light up. They are getting frustrated because they want this book to count as read for them, but it isn't. Do you know why or have any advice?

    2. I would recommend contacting Epic Books directly. There is likely a bug in their system.

  6. Do you have a paid account? My dashboard looks different than yours and I can't seem to find the teacher tracking info you shared.

    1. No, I have a regular teacher account, but this post is a couple of years old. I’ll put it on my list to update when I can, but I am teaching full-time, too!
