How to Use the Helpful New Digital Overlay Tool on TpT

Teachers Pay Teachers has introduced a super-helpful digital overlay tool for use with PDF files on the site in anticipation of continued distance learning or virtual classrooms this year. Paired with Google Classroom, this tool takes some headaches out of preparation time for teachers.

The digital overlay tool, or TpT Digital Activities as it is called, is a great tool for teachers to have at their disposal at this unpredictable time in teaching, but there are some considerations to keep in mind when using it.

More on that in a second.

First, let's take a look at how it works!

Considerations to Remember

It is important to remember a few things when using this tool.

First of all, you aren't going to see this in every Teacher-Author's store. Only those who have opted-in to the service will have PDF resources that can be customized in this way.

Second, not every PDF resource listed in a Teacher-Author's store is going to lend itself to use in this way with your students. Just because a resource listing says "Create Digital Activity" it doesn't mean that there's anything about the resource that will work.

You need to be sure to consider the resource itself and how it will meet your needs, and understand that this tool is an added bonus that you may, or may not, choose to use.

What About Leaving Feedback?

When you use resources with the digital overlay tool and choose to leave feedback, please ensure that your rating and the majority of your comments are based on the base PDF itself, not on the overlay tool features or how it worked with the resource.

Most Teacher-Authors, myself included, are intentionally not converting some of our resources over to digital formats because they don't 100% lend themselves to the format, so these are not going to be perfect. They're going to be functional.

Please evaluate the resource, not the tool.

Want More Polished Digital Options?

The TpT Digital Activities tool is great, but it is a very basic way to share digital resources with your students. I have tons of ready-to-go digital resources for Google AND Seesaw available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store! Here is a small sample:
