A Year of Awesome - Week 5

Things are really rolling along now! We are into our 5th week of school and it is BUSY, but not too busy for some awesome (or a giveaway)!!
Today we did our very first Read to Someone! After 15 days of stamina building during Read to Self it is refreshing to have a change of pace. And the kids were really awesome!! Most of them easily transferred all that we've learned from reading independently to this new partnership. Plus, I was actually able to get a running record done during the literacy block! Woo hoo! They may be finished by the time progress reports are due! ;) Awesome!
Tonight was our Open House! Parents and students were invited in to the school to "Meet the Teacher" and check out the classroom, and what a fun night! I teach in a school that shares a parking lot with my former high school, and tonight was a reunion of sorts! So many familiar faces walked through my door! Awesome!

I always prepare a small package of things that the parents can do to support their children at home, plus my Remind subscription information, and this year I threw in a little something extra:
These were a huge hit! You can grab them for your own use FREE from my Teachers Pay Teachers store!
Great day!! It was our first Book Fair of the year. I LOOOVE the book fair. I can't resist a new picture book (or three)! I can seriously still remember visiting the book fair when I was a student, and that was a very long time ago! I mean, just look at this space... and this photo is only a small fraction of the room!
Today was also an exciting day IN the classroom for the boys and girls in grade 2/3! We finally reached our goal for Read to Self minutes!
The kids were SO proud of themselves, and I am so proud of them! They have come a long way in a few short weeks! Taking our time and really building our skills the right way has paid off. I absolutely love the Daily 5 and CAFE programs! They help me grow strong readers! AWESOME!
Tricky to say what my Awesome moment was for today. It was a great day, but not one that has any huge stand-out moments. We painted, and nobody spilled paint or water anywhere. Nobody was in trouble on the yard. Everyone got their work done. Several Heart Garden messages were presented. Perhaps the only really memorable moment today was when I was on lunch duty and one of my students from last year told me that he loved me. Yup. He said it, and then instantly realized what he'd done and blushed from the tip of his toes to the top of his ears. It was one of the cutest things I've heard all year. I guess that's pretty awesome! :)
Also absolutely awesome was having one of my former fifth-grade students working in our school as a supply teacher this week! Did THAT ever make me feel old!! SO awesome! (Minus the old bit!) :)
We had a ball in the gym today!! After some heavy-duty writing in their Friday Journals, I introduced the kids to my fitness centers. They LOVED them! I absolutely had to preserve the ear-to-ear smiles in these photos! I think the favorite had to be the bicycle... just look at them! I love to see my kiddos having this much fun, and the photos were totally NOT staged!! Awesome!!

  1. I love the idea of fitness task cards as an alternative activity for gym, or perhaps as a regular weekly activity. Anything we can do to get kids moving is a good thing!

  2. Way to go grade 2/3's for reaching your goal!!! That's amazing! So proud of you!
I'm supplying teaching now, so your Fitness Task Cards would be a perfect addition to my Supply Teacher Bag. I've also added it to my wish list, just in case. Have a great Sunday!

  3. This is a fabulous way to showcase your week. I have had my kids for 7 days now, and I am loving my new class. After an awesome class last year, I was worried that this one would be very challenging, but they have such a super community feel, the academic challenges don't worry me. I know we can make great strides this year. Now if I could only find a few moments to get some photos.
Your fitness pack looks like it would be fun to use.
