Happy Valentine's Day!

Well, I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised with how well this day went. It was a Friday, and Valentine's Day, AND a full moon. 'Nuff said.

During the middle block of our day, we had a class of Grade 8 students join us for 40 minutes of craft/activity time. I really wasn't sure of how much help the intermediate students would be, especially since they were with a supply teacher for the day, but this group really stepped up to the plate. They instantly joined up with my littles, not scrambling to find someone they already knew, or looking for a boy or a girl... they just each headed to a desk and dove right in.

My plan was to do a hand print activity where the heart is revealed between the two hands.
Loving Leigh's post at The Applicious Teacher, but not thinking I could pull off the outer heart cutouts for all my students in addition to the painting, I planned on just having the students decorate around the outside. As the older students arrived and got my kiddos started, I quickly realized this was going to take a fraction of the time I'd originally planned, and they took charge of creating the hearts with their buddies. And did they ever do a great job...

It was so much fun to watch the kids in action, since I taught many of these Grade 8s when they were in Grade 5! We topped each piece off with Leigh's poem, available as a free download HERE. I even found the time to laminate each one so the kids could take them home to their Valentines tonight.
After the crafts, we all went down to the gymnasium (along with half the students in the school) for some Just Dance! I wish I could have shared some photos of this, but the lights were out so the videos could be seen. Imagine 150 children from 5 to 14 dancing just about in sync to some of today's most popular music. It definitely brought a smile to this gal's face!

Finally, at the end of the day, my kiddos were excited to get their little (non-candy!) Valentine from me!

Happy Valentine's Day!
