What a Monday...!!

Wow! It was one of those Mondays that everyone dreads! It started with getting stuck at the railway crossing waiting for a freight train. This on my detour route trying to avoid the local construction. Then, it ended with a hand soap mega-leak all over my classroom floor. At least I didn't have to clean that one up. ;)

In between all of this was some very busy learning time! I pulled out my newest product - Place Value Matching Cards - during math. It was great!

The students had to sort numbers that were represented in standard form, word form, and with base ten blocks. I was clearly able to see who has a firm grasp of place value and who is still struggling. You can pick up a copy from Teachers Pay Teachers by clicking the image below:

We also reached a whopping 12 minutes of Read to Self time today!

It has taken a great deal of modeling what Read to Self looks like and doesn't look like for us to get to this point. You can see one of my little ones even chose to use a pair of our "earmuffs" during Read to Self today. (Our primary division has purchased a pile of noise-reducing ear-protection for use in the classroom. This is one of the only things in the classroom that my kids argue over - they ALL want to use them!)

I am exhausted, and hoping tomorrow goes much more smoothly! I'm very interested to know how other classes are doing at establishing Daily 5 routines. What is working? What have your roadblocks been?

  1. I have a roadblock to share. What do you do when you children in and out of your room for 2 hours every day? It is making it hard to get my Daily 5 in. Do you meet with all of your groups every day?

    1. Wow! That certainly is tough. The same may happen in my room later on this term, but I'm thankful to have all of my students in the room for this "training" period. At this point I am just introducing Read to Someone, so no groups are happening yet. It took us quite a long time to build Read to Self stamina. We had to do a great deal of practicing and modeling what it should look like. I'm hoping that now things will start to progress!

Thanks for commenting, Lori! Best of luck as you continue!

  2. Aaaaah, it is through these challenging situations that our creative juices 'kick' in. Please continue to press forward and have a great school year no matter how difficult, frustrating and tiring things may get. I would a copy of your Place Value Matching Cards, it seems amazing and I can't wait to use with my students next week.

    Be strong and take care
